How did I Get Here?

Updated: Jun 19, 2022

Growing up, I despised the idea of being a teacher. Instead, I wanted to become a world famous author. Well.....Let's just say that it did not work out, and I am glad it didn't. Let's take it from the start.

The Early Years

I was born with a disability and adopted into a loving family at birth. Although, my childhood my was filled with challenges it was wonderful. I grew up on farm in Texas. There were cows and dogs and plenty of places to play. My family is quite large, so I always had cousins to play with. I learned to ski, did karate, and took gymnastics.

School

I LOVED school! I was supported and loved there. I had friends and life was good. However, in middle school things got hard. Our junior high was two stories but had no working elevator. This made it extremely difficult to get to my classes. As a result, my parents decided to home school me. So, for the next year, I spent my days at my father's photography studio where I did my school work. When I was in the 8th grade, I enrolled in a private school. This change was hard but good. Here, I only went to school three days a week and completed assignments on the other two days. This taught me time management and discipline. During my junior year of high school, I need something different. So, my parents allowed my to transfer back to my local high school. I was home. My days were filled with football, baseball, dances and the best friends a girl could ask for. With the help of my AP English teacher and my Physics teacher (a published author), I really started to develop my writing skills. I already loved reading, so my next step was to major in English.

College

College was so difficult on every level. It is the most challenging thing I have ever done. (and that is saying a lot) I was away from home for the first time and facing more physical challenges than I could have ever imagined. My writing was constantly being critiqued and even the reading was difficult. This rocked my confidence in a major way. Everyone around me was a good writer and at one one point seemed better than me. Through the help of some amazing professors I improved and slowly regained my confidence. Eventually, I was inducted into the Honor Society for English majors and graduated in 2013.

Now After college, I did what I was supposed to and looked for a job. I continuously applied for writing jobs with not success. In 2015, I became a substitute teacher and was introduced to the AVID program. I became a group tutor and was bitten by the teaching bug. In 2017, I completed my student teaching requirements and earned my certification. Again, I set out to look for a job. I had several interviews, but did not get hired. Out of desperation, I started to look for things I jobs I could do at home. I stumbled upon online tutoring. It was PERFECT for me. Now, I get to help middle school students get better at writing one paragraph at a time in an one-to one environment that I love. If you have a struggling middle school writer and want to see if I would be a good fit to help; you can book a free consultation or contact me here
